End of Driveway RepairOrmond Beach, Florida
A new concrete driveway in Ormond Beach met a worn, cracked road with a gap in between. We filled it with asphalt so the drive flows onto the street. The finished strip is above, and the work photos below are labeled.

The Gap
What does an end of driveway repair involve?
Filling the gap where a driveway meets the street so the transition is solid, smooth and water tight. It sounds small. It is where many driveways start to break up.
In this frame a crew member rakes a pile of hot mix along the edge of the new concrete while the plate compactor waits on the grass. The mix goes in slightly proud of the finished line, gets raked to meet the concrete, then compacted down flush.
The road beyond is shaded by oaks, like many Ormond Beach streets running toward Tomoka State Park, and shade keeps pavement damp and weak at the edges. At M&S Asphalt Paving, we treat this as driveway paving in miniature: the base, the mix and the compaction all matter just as much on a strip a few feet wide. Short strips get skipped because they look small, and they are the ones that hold water.
The Compaction
Why does the edge of a new concrete driveway need asphalt work at all?
Because the road edge is rarely level with the new drive. Digging out and pouring concrete leaves a drop, a gap or a broken lip where the old pavement used to run. That drop matters.
Here the plate compactor works the freshly laid strip right up to the concrete, with a pile of mix beside it for the next section. A strip like this takes weight from every car that pulls in, so loose mix is not an option. It is compacted in layers until it is as hard as the drive.
Work in the street right of way often needs approval from the City of Ormond Beach or Volusia County, so we confirm that before we cut. If the concrete is not yet poured, ask about our concrete services so the drive and the tie-in are planned together. Doing both at once means one visit and no mismatched edge between the two surfaces.
What Comes Next
How long should this kind of repair last, and what should you do afterward?
A well compacted strip lasts as long as the road around it. That is the honest limit.
Look at the cracked road beside the new strip in this photo. The patch holds, but the old road keeps moving, and cracks will eventually run along the joint. Fill them while they are narrow and the joint stays closed for years. Wait, and water gets under the strip from the side.
Keep heavy trucks off the new asphalt until it has cooled through, which takes longer on an Ormond Beach afternoon in summer than on a winter morning. It is worth the wait, because tire marks in warm mix never come out. Near the Halifax River, where the ground stays damp, early crack work matters even more. See crack filling and repairs for what we do when the rest of the surface needs help. Ask us to look at the rest of the road edge while the crew is already on site.
